HVAC Company in Hillsborough, CA

Keeping your Hillsborough home comfortable year-round means choosing the right heating, ventilation, and air conditioning solutions for the local climate, building types, and air-quality challenges. Whether you live in a 1920s Mediterranean-style home or a modern new build, high-performance HVAC work improves comfort, lowers energy bills, and protects indoor air quality — especially important here, where cool coastal fog, occasional Bay Area heat waves, and seasonal wildfire smoke create unique demands.

Assessment and system-sizing process

An accurate assessment is the foundation of reliable HVAC performance and efficiency. Typical steps include:

  1. Home evaluation: Review of home square footage, orientation, insulation, window types, occupancy, and attic or crawlspace conditions. Hillsborough homes often have varied building envelopes and historical construction, which impacts load calculations.
  2. Load calculation: A Manual J style heat-loss and heat-gain calculation determines the precise heating and cooling capacity required. This prevents oversizing (short cycling and humidity problems) and undersizing (poor comfort on heat waves).
  3. Duct and airflow analysis: Inspection of existing ducts for leaks, insulation level, sizing, and static pressure. If ducts are undersized or leaky, equipment performance and efficiency drop significantly.
  4. Equipment selection: Matching equipment to the calculated load and the homeowner’s priorities (quiet operation, highest efficiency, minimal footprint). For Hillsborough, prioritizing systems that handle coastal humidity and occasional high outdoor temperatures is typical.
  5. Proposal and timeline: A transparent, written estimate outlining equipment options, efficiency ratings, expected performance, and installation timeline.

Energy-efficient equipment recommendations

Hillsborough homeowners often want to maximize energy savings and comfort while reducing environmental impact. Common recommendations:

  • Heat pumps (air-source and ducted mini-splits): Provide both heating and cooling with high efficiency and are well-suited for mild Bay Area winters.
  • Variable-speed compressors and ECM motors: Improve humidity control, lower operating noise, and reduce energy use compared with single-stage systems.
  • High-SEER and high-HSPF units: For homes that run cooling or heat-pump heating frequently during occasional heat waves.
  • Smart thermostats and zoning: Allow precise control over temperature by room or zone, improving comfort and reducing wasted energy.
  • Compatibility with solar PV: Integrating HVAC choices with existing or planned rooftop solar increases long-term energy benefits.

Assistance with manufacturer warranties, extended warranty options, and available local or state rebates is part of making an efficient upgrade cost-effective. Documentation and application support for rebates and permits help ensure homeowners capture available incentives.

Ductwork services and airflow optimization

Duct performance is crucial in older Hillsborough homes where ducts may run through uninsulated attics or basements:

  • Duct sealing and insulation: Reducing leaks and insulating ducts in unconditioned spaces prevents significant energy loss.
  • Duct resizing and layout correction: Ensures proper airflow to all rooms and improves system longevity.
  • Airflow balancing and register adjustments: Improves comfort in rooms that were previously too hot or cold.
  • Replacement or redesign for historic homes: Discrete solutions and minimal invasive methods are used when preserving architectural character is important.

Thermostat and zoning solutions

  • Multi-zone systems: Use motorized dampers and multiple thermostats to control temperatures separately in upstairs, downstairs, and addition areas—useful in multi-level Hillsborough homes.
  • Smart controls and occupancy learning thermostats: Improve comfort and savings by adapting schedules and integrating with remote monitoring.
  • Remote sensors: Address temperature variations in long hallways or sun-exposed rooms for more accurate control.

Indoor air quality and wildfire smoke protection

California wildfire smoke is a seasonal concern for Bay Area residences. Effective IAQ strategies include:

  • High-MERV filters or HEPA-grade filtration for forced-air systems
  • Dedicated whole-house filtration or portable HEPA units for sensitive rooms
  • ERV/HRV systems for balanced ventilation without compromising filtration
  • UV germicidal lights to reduce biological contaminants
  • Proper humidification in cooler months and dehumidification during damp spells to prevent mold

During smoke events, systems can be set to recirculate indoor air with high-efficiency filters engaged to minimize infiltration of particulates.

Licensing, safety credentials, and quality assurance

Proper licensing and credentials matter for safety, code compliance, and peace of mind:

  • California contractor licensing specific to HVAC work and appropriate local permits
  • EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling
  • Manufacturer training certifications and industry-standard credentials (for example, NATE-level technicians)
  • Liability insurance, workers compensation coverage, and local permit handling
  • Adherence to local building codes, electrical standards, and inspection processes

Documentation of permits, equipment model and serial numbers, and warranty registration are standard parts of a quality installation.

Warranty, rebate assistance, and documentation

  • Manufacturer and extended warranties: Explanation of what’s covered, typical durations, and owner responsibilities for maintenance to keep warranties valid.
  • Rebate assistance: Guidance on common rebate types, required paperwork, and typical processing steps to help homeowners take advantage of incentives.
  • Post-installation documentation: Includes system manuals, maintenance checklists, and a summary of work performed for future service needs.

COVID-19 and jobsite safety practices

In response to health concerns, standard safety practices include:

  • Health screening of technicians and reduced crew sizes when practical
  • Use of masks and gloves during close-contact work and while inside homes
  • Minimizing time spent in occupied rooms and maintaining distancing whenever possible
  • Sanitizing equipment and work areas, and avoiding unnecessary contact with household items

These measures are intended to protect both residents and technicians while enabling essential HVAC services to continue.

Typical pricing and quoting process (what to expect)

  • Transparent estimates: Written proposals that explain equipment options, model efficiencies, scope of work, and projected timelines.
  • Onsite assessment: A properly scoped quote usually follows an in-person evaluation to measure loads, inspect ducts, and identify installation constraints.
  • Financing and paperwork: Many projects include options for financing and assistance preparing rebate or permit documentation.
  • Timeline and milestones: Clear expected dates for equipment delivery, installation start, and final inspection.

Why timely HVAC service matters in Hillsborough Proactive maintenance and properly sized, high-efficiency equipment improve comfort through mild winters, hot summer spikes, and smoky air episodes. Timely repairs prevent costly breakdowns during peak demand, extend system life, and protect indoor air quality for occupants.

We found Plum HVAC in 2024 after spending more than 2 months searching and comparing estimates.  The owner Sam gave us a very competitive price for a Mitsubishi mini-split and the installation went off without a hitch.  Our experience was so positive that we later requested their services twice more to also install A/Cs for our 2 other rooms.  Their technician, Jake, led our installations each time and we were very impressed by their professionalism and quality of work. Now 1 year in and we could not be any happier, nor have we encountered any issues with our models.

Sam of Plum HVAC, responded to our Heat Pump installation request promptly and provided a very competitive estimate after an onsite visit. He was very flexible and patient to answer and explain our questions. After we signed the contract, he and his team of 4 worked very hard to deliver and install the whole Heat Pump system on time with good quality. I am particularly impressed by their problem solving skills to overcome different connection challenges for the attic installation. Each day before they started, they covered the floors with protection blankets and cleaned after they were done for the day. They also revised the drainage and electric work per the city inspection guidance. Sam and his team were professional and honest so we highly recommend Plum HVAC to any customers who need HVAC work done for their houses.

We needed to install a mini-split in a backyard unit. Sam and his team helped with this, and they did a fantastic job. Sam visited our place and clearly explained to me what needed to be done, and offered a great price. He scheduled the job for a few days later, and his team performed the job with extraordinary quality. Later, I noticed a minor issue and reached out to them. Sam helped me to fix the issue on a second visit by his team later in the week, providing top-notch customer service. I will work with them in the future for my HVAC jobs, and highly recommend them given their excellent work quality and customer service.

I reached out to 4 companies for mini split quotes; Plum HVAC pricing came in the lowest. Beyond that, Sam was very knowledgeable and kind during the in home consultation. He offered a quote in person, & stuck by it. They removed our old furnace, and installed a two head mini split in our two story townhouse. The work as you can see is very clean! The guys who installed it were very fun & professional. Sam & his team were communicative the whole way through including the permitting process. They took roughly one full day for install, which was very fast! Including removal & disposal of our old furnace. Natalie was very helpful throughout the Bayren Rebate process & always available for any questions! This system has changed our lives, wish we would have gotten it done sooner! It’s way better than we could have imagined.

Wonderful experience with Plum HVAC on a heat pump installation! I checked several companies, compared their recommendations, timelines, reputations and prices.Sam, the owner, was very professional and has almost 2 decades of experience in HVAC. When I asked dumb questions, he answered most graciously. And when I noted that some companies we queried said we could get away WITHOUT replacing our original ductwork from 1965, he gave us his honest opinion why that wasn't a good idea. (Hubby remembered later that people who worked in our attic adding insulation told us there were lots of duct leaks.)

I called 8 different HVAC companies for quotes for a heat pump heating/ac system because I want to save money by switching from a forced air gas furnace to an electric heat pump system which will give me both heating and air conditioning. In addition my old furnace (circa 1991) was way oversized for my home and the air coming out too noisy. The New heat pump system is quieter and more efficient.  Back to the quotes for the system, all the other 7 companies sent a salesperson/advisor to give the quote. Sam, the owner of Plum HVAC came our to give the quote. He was quick with his quote and was very knowledgeable. He didn't try to upsell me on anything and have the lowest quote of them all. His price was 60% less than the highest quote and 15% lower than the next second lowest quote.

Sam was one of the most professional business owners I had the chance to meet over the past few years and I'm so happy I trusted him to install our new A/C unit.- He showed up on time- He was transparent (and reasonable) regarding pricing- He offered 2-3 options- His crew did a very clean/thorough jobWhat I loved the most though, was the fact he was very easy to communicate with. I would definitely use him again and recommend him to our neighbors/friends.

I cannot say enough about Plum HVAC, who replaced my aging heater furnace, and in particular Sam. Sam was very highly recommended by my sister, who replaced her furnace and added air conditioning.First, they gave me a good deal for a 2-stage, at the same cost as the lowest bid for a 1-stage. The other bids were dancing around some gas line work made by previous owners.
